Computers only understand 1s and 0s, or machine code. Early programmers literally flipped switches. It was a nightmare. We needed to get away from the hardware. We needed Abstraction.
A car is an abstraction. You don’t need to know how the engine works to drive it. You just use the steering wheel and pedals. Programming languages are layers of abstraction. The first layer up from binary was Assembly language, which uses simple mnemonics like “ADD.” An Assembler translates this into 1s and 0s.
The real revolution was High-Level Languages: Python, Java, C++. They use English-like words (`if`, `for`, `while`) and let us think about problems at a higher level. A program called a Compiler or an Interpreter then does the heavy lifting of translating this friendly code all the way down into machine code.
A Compiled language like C++ is like translating a whole book from English to Spanish at once. You compile it and get an executable file that’s ready to run. First, Variables. A variable is just a named container for data. Think of it as a labeled box. You can have a box called `userScore` that holds the number 0. When the user scores, you just update the value in that box.
Next, Control Structures. These control the program’s flow. The main one is the `if-else` statement. It’s a fork in the road. “IF the password is correct, THEN log in. ELSE, show an error.” The other is a Loop. A loop repeats code. A `for` loop repeats a set number of times. A `while` loop repeats *until* a condition is met.
Then you have Functions. A function is a named, reusable block of code. Instead of writing out the steps to calculate sales tax every time you sell something, you write a function called `calculateTax`. You give it the price (input), it does the math and gives you the final cost (output). Now you can just “call” that function by name anywhere in your code.

You can now just say `redFerrari.drive()` without worrying about the complex mechanics underneath. You made it. Senior year. Now we see how it all fits together.
Let’s go back to the Operating System. It’s the government of your computer. Imagine running your browser, music, and a game all at once. They all want the CPU, they all want RAM. It would be chaos. The OS kernel acts as the traffic cop, scheduling whose turn it is to use the CPU, giving each program its own protected slice of memory, and managing the file system so nothing gets overwritten. It’s the unsung hero that makes multitasking possible.
So how do these computers talk to each other? The Internet. The internet isn’t a cloud; it’s a worldwide network of physical cables. The best analogy is a global postal system.
Every device has a unique IP Address, which is like its street address. When you type “google.com” in your browser, your computer doesn’t know where that is. It first has to look up the IP address in a giant, global address book called the Domain Name System, or DNS.
Once it has the address, your browser sends a request. But it breaks the request into thousands of tiny pieces called Packets. Each packet is like a little envelope with the destination IP address and your return address. These packets get sent into the mail stream, hopping between special computers called routers, each one forwarding them in the right direction. They might take different routes, but they all get reassembled at the destination—in this case, Google’s server.
